There is an elective that is called AVID in this school that has Mr. Burnett, Mr. Wright, and Ms. Hillis in charge. I asked Mr. Burnett about what AVID is, if it is for everybody, and if this elective is worth your while.
What is AVID?
“AVID is an acronym that stands for Advancement Via individual Determination. AVID is designed to give every kid that wants to go to college that needs guidance through school.”
What do you do in AVID?
“In AVID, you practice organization, do tutorials using socratic methods, stratic seminars, and hopefully go to colleges to visit them.”
Was there a specific reason you wanted to teach AVID?
“I believe these kids can do things that are amazing. It is awesome to watch or hear what they want to do in the future.”
Is AVID for everyone?
“No, it is not. You would have to want to go to college and you have to be motivated because it is not easy.”
What brings you joy when you are running this elective?
“A lot of days are very gruesome but in the end, when they graduate, they show me their grades, come and visit me, it makes me very proud.”
In conclusion, this class isn’t for everyone. You have to want to go to college and have to put effort in this class because it isn’t easy. You can’t just do whatever you want in this class and expect an A. But if you want to go to college, this is a perfect
elective for you. You will have materials that can help you go to college and even amazing teachers as well! But keep in mind that you are going to have to put in the effort. This is your life, do whatever you want to do! And like what Mr. Burnett said he believes that all kids can do amazing things, but we just don’t see it yet. Who knows what the future holds for you. But one thing for sure, only you are able to make your dreams become reality.
