COVID Brings the Drama

COVID Brings the Drama

-by Kaylee Horrell

The Theatre and Drama department looks a little bit different this year at Century, as do most things nowadays.

Unfortunately, last year’s musical “The Little Mermaid” was cut short due to the closings of schools from Covid-19. This year, it is much more difficult to bring big productions like this to life, but surely there are other upcoming theatre/drama projects to look forward to. A theatre 2 student expressed their enthusiasm about being able to participate in theatre this year. “Although this year is different, theatre allows me to connect with my friends again in a really fun way.”

This year, Theatre 2, 3, and 4 are combined into one class, where they will be producing a radio play. Radio Plays were a popular form of entertainment, especially in the 1940’s. Because of our current limitations, Miss Sauve decided that this would be a perfect choice. As radio plays are solely reliant on audio performance, they are perfectly compliant with distance learning!

What play the class will be producing has not been released yet, so we will have to wait to find out! Theatre Tech 2 class will be working on another project online, which will be a choose-your-own-adventure esque activity. We are so fortunate to have these adaptable options for our theatre students and exciting “performances” for everybody to enjoy.

Along with the theatre classes, Drama club also has performance opportunities for students. Drama club is available to anybody who wants to join, the meetings are every Thursday from 3:30 to 4:30.

Miss Sauve is currently working on an alternative project for the usual spring musical, that anybody will be able to participate in as we continue with distance learning. Other opportunities are in the works too. Drama club has been brainstorming some ideas like trivia and improv nights that will be available for everybody.

Currently, most projects are in the beginning stages of development, but it is no question that Miss Sauve has been working very hard and creating exciting performances for us. We are truly lucky to have so many exciting things to look forward to and even participate in!
